The fund provides bursaries of up to £500 to help students and new starters with COVID-19 related financial challenges such as housing, food, travel, and technology costs associated with online learning.
An IT Equipment Bursary of up to £500 is also available for those facing financial difficulties to assist with the cost of purchasing personal IT equipment to access online learning (eg a laptop).
This round (round 7) is the first round that 2020/21 new entrants will be eligible to apply for.
This fund was initially supported entirely by donations, with an additional £240,000 allocated to the fund by the University to ensure that funding rounds would take place in June, July, August and September.
I will remember this help my whole life.

The first six rounds to date received around 1,700 applications with over 900 successfully funded. All applications are assessed for need by impartial volunteers drawn from University staff, following which all applications were moderated and scored before being taken to a final panel for decision.
Students who successfully applied to the ESSF in previous rounds are, in most cases, now eligible to apply again in the current and future rounds. The only exception is those students who were fully funded in the June round of applications. If this applies to you, and you still have funding requirements, please contact the Student Hub who will be able to offer you advice on other options.
