The H-bar: An evening of Science Cabaret

Join York students and staff for a night of rapid-fire science entertainment.

Following on from the success of Pint of Science, The H-bar will showcase a variety of eight-minute acts from staff and students from the University including music, comedy, circus skills and science talks.

Dr Chris Stewart, a visiting academic in the Department of Physics will be hosting the event at the Walmgate Ale HouseThursday 17 MayDr Emily Brunsden, also from the Department of Physics, will be doing her own eight-minute act. Other performers expected on the night will range from students from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Ecology and Biophysics, an engineering professor from Leeds, a local science teacher, and a circus performer.

Chris said: ‘It’s meant to be light, entertaining and fun. I want the event to provide students with an opportunity to try out their science communication skills in front of a friendly crowd.’

The lineup includes:
- Dr Emily Brunsden, astronomer in the Department of Physics and Director of Astrocampus: Five Ways the Universe is Trying to Kill You
- Vilasini Venkatesh, Mathematics PhD student and musician: with an original composition merging her twin loves of quantum information theory and prog metal music. 
- Rosie Leaman, Biophysics PhD student: It’s All About The Little Things, a talk on her research into fluorescence microscopy
- Conor Cooper, Biology Masters student talking about the trials and pitfalls of a trainee biologist
- James Lees, Physics graduate and science communicator on the science, or lack thereof, in astrology
