Updates for the start of the autumn term

Posted on 3 October 2011

An update on a few key improvements we have made over summer, including the updated student website, new University card and enhanced printing facilities.

New student homepage

We have updated the look, feel and functionality of the student website, including a new student homepage. From the start of term you will be able to log onto the student homepage to view personalised information such as your timetable and Library status, receive news and alerts and quick links to useful information and student systems.

Further updates are planned throughout the year. See about the student site to read more about what's new and what we have planned for the future. You can give feedback on the site using the form at the bottom of every page on the student site.

New University Card design

The new student card design

We have changed the design of the student card and have issued a similar version to staff.

  • New students: you will receive the new card design at the start of term.
  • Returning students: you will receive a replacement for your current card sometime during the first term.

For more information see Student Cards.

Updates from IT Services

We have made improvements to the resources provided in the IT classrooms and study areas. PCs have been upgraded to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office is now the 2010 version.

Enhanced printing facilities

We have replaced all the printers in the IT rooms and Library with Multifunctional Devices (MFDs) as part of a new service called York Print Plus. These machines can print, copy and scan. This means you can:

  • Send to a central print queue  then print at leisure from any printer.
  • Print, copy and scan in the Library and IT rooms across campus.
  • Login faster by swiping your University card.
  • Have access to more colour printers.
  • Help us achieve environmental savings.

For more information on changes to printing resources see York Print Plus for students.

Visiting the IT Support Office

The IT Support Office is now located in the Harry Fairhurst building on the first floor.

Updates from the Library

Most of the ground floor is now closed as part of the refurbishment including the old Freshers bar. This floor is due to open again in early 2012.

The newly refurbished first floor is now fully open and the Harry Fairhurst building remains a popular place to study, meet and collaborate. Please see Library updates for further information about Library resources this term.
