Online induction
There are some things you need to know and do before you begin.
Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor
How will you use your time at York? And how can we help you achieve all the things you want to during your time with us? Watch Vice-Chancellor Charlie Jeffery explain the kind of community you'll be joining when you begin your studies with us.
Postgraduate researchers: Sign up for your induction event
Postgraduate researchers are members of the York Graduate Research School (YGRS). See YGRS information for new postgraduate researchers and sign up for the face-to-face induction event on Wednesday 2 October 2024.
How to use the VLE
Our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) contains online course materials. For taught postgraduates, you'll find links to online seminars and lectures, interactive tools for discussion and collaboration, and places to submit assignments. Postgraduate researchers need to complete the Research Integrity Tutorial and the Being an Effective Researcher Tutorial (BERT) on the VLE in your first year.
Get to know the basics by watching this video.
Use your University username and password to sign in to the VLE - see Things to do first for details.
Understanding consent
At the University of York we are all part of the Community Without Limits.
To support an inclusive environment at York, we ask all students to complete the Understanding Consent online learning. Understanding Consent supports everyone to better understand what sexual consent is, the law around consent, how to respect people’s sexual boundaries, and how to have healthy, consensual relationships.
You should complete Understanding Consent before Welcome Week. Together, we can create a community where everybody feels respected and supported.
You will need to log in to the VLE to complete this module. Use your University username and password to sign in to the VLE - see Things to do first for details.
Starting your career journey
It's good to use the time before you start your postgraduate degree to think about your career plans and goals.
Personal safety awareness
Whilst York is one of the safest cities in the UK, it is important to think about personal safety. We have developed a series of videos with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to help you think about assessing, managing and reducing risk and conflict. You will explore situational awareness and ways to defuse a situation, plus the importance of reporting incidents.
Success at York
Want to know the secret to a great start to your studies? Watch this video to find out why using our Success at York Toolkit throughout your time at university will keep you motivated and get the most out of your time at York.
Your Students' Union
The University of York Students' Union provides independent and confidential advice and guidance to students on academic issues, University policies and procedures, and personal and wellbeing issues.
