Placements and tuition fees
Going on a study or work placement will affect your tuition fee amount and funding for that year.
The following applies if you embark on a:
- Placement abroad
- Department Year in Industry
- Placement Year with Careers and Placements
Department Year in Industry
Tuition fees
- The tuition fees for a Year in Industry will be 20% of the full fee for that year.
- If you started University before September 2017, you will pay 15% of the full fee for that year.
- If you are receiving a student loan, you must tell your loan provider and the tuition fee element of your loan will be reduced accordingly.
Maintenance Loan
- UK students can apply for a reduced rate Maintenance Loan, even if you are on a paid placement.
- The amount you are entitled to will vary depending on your funding provider and where you will be living while on placement.
York Bursary
- If you normally receive the York Bursary, you will not be eligible during your year in industry as you are not paying full tuition fees.

Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs)
- DSAs are for academic support only.
- There are some circumstances where you may continue to receive some support while on placement.
- Please contact Disability for further information about support on placement (disabilityservices
@york.ac.uk ).
Council Tax
- Students on placement in the UK remain eligible for Council Tax exemption as a full time student.
- Exemption is not automatic, you will need to request an exemption certificate via e:Vision.

Placement Year with Careers and Placements
Tuition fees
- The tuition fees for a placement year will be 20% of the full fee for that year.
