Moving out of your accommodation

Leaving us? We're sad to you see go. Here's what you need to do before you depart.

Quick glance checklist

  1. Check your departure day by logging in at accommodation.york.ac.uk
  2. Clean your entire house and leave any gardens tidy
  3. Recycle or donate your unwanted items, including washing machines (these unfortunately cannot be reused by the next tenant)
  4. Ensure your waste is collected through planned waste collections or taken to the recycling centre
  5. Close your energy accounts and settle any outstanding bills
  6. Hand back your keys at Halifax College Reception

Moving out checklist

To avoid being charged, make sure to complete all of the tasks on our moving out checklist. 

  • Check your departure date at accommodation.york.ac.uk.
  • Speak to your department if you're planning to leave before the end of Week 10.
  • Change your address and consider redirecting your mail at royalmail.com/redirection.
  • Check your subscriptions and cancel any that you will no longer need, such as food delivery subscription boxes.
  • Begin sorting out all unwanted items and arrange to donate or sell them, including washing machines (these unfortunately cannot be reused by the next tenant).
  • Remove items and adhesives from any noticeboards and clean marks from any walls.
  • Cut your grass (if applicable) and leave any gardens tidy and waste-free.
  • Dust and wipe down your surfaces (including skirting boards).
  • Clean sinks, taps and mirrors and make sure that they are streak-free.
  • Clean the inside of windows and make sure the glass is streak-free.
  • Empty and wipe any work tops, shelves, drawers, wardrobes and other storage.
  • Vacuum any carpets and leave them stain-free.
  • Empty your bins and ensure your waste is collected through planned waste collections or taken to the recycling centre.
  • Close your energy accounts and pay any outstanding bills.
  • Close windows, turn off lights and lock any doors.
  • Put any final rubbish/recycling in the external bins.
  • Check and take your mail with you.
  • Hand back your keys at Halifax College Reception.

Your deposit

Once we have checked your accommodation, your deposit will be released to you, with any deductions for damage, missing items or cleaning taken out.

House inspections

We’ll always compare the condition of your house to the inventory you completed when you moved in, to make sure we don’t charge you for any previous damage.

What to do with your things

You can’t leave anything in your accommodation when you go, so we recommend that you start to clear out your unwanted items a few weeks before you’re due to leave.

Recycling and waste

Please plan ahead and make the most of your local reuse and recycling facilities to reduce waste generated during departure.
