Departmental visits supplement the standard quality assurance processes in that they take place on an ad hoc basis when a need is identified. Compared to periodic review visits, departmental visits are shorter, less formal and have a more flexible and focused agenda.
A departmental visit may either be initiated by a department, if it feels that this would be an effective way of exploring some aspect of its taught or research degree provision, or initiated by UTC on a 'by exception' basis to assist a department in addressing a significant problem with its taught or research degree provision.
Whether initiated by a department or by UTC, departmental visits aim to be developmental and supportive.
