Becoming eligible to teach
Postgraduate researchers (PGRs) who intend to teach at York should complete this prerequisite training, which will help develop your confidence to teach as a GTA:
Finding a GTA teaching post
- Begin by contacting your departmental GTA Coordinator - this is how most GTAs secure work
- Additional opportunities may be advertised on Handshake
Further in-role training and development
All PGRs are automatically enrolled on the GTA Community site on the VLE. Staff can request access.
We review the site regularly and it is currently being redeveloped to include:
- Self-paced online guidance, with the first two units now released on Engaging Learners Through Small-Group Teaching and Engaging Learner Through Demonstrating.
- Events associated with these online units are also under development.
Getting professional recognition for your teaching
Secure transferable professional recognition with an Advance HE Fellowship through engaging with The York Academic and Professional Development Scheme (YPAD).

Additional professional development opportunities and support
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: GTAs interested in developing their teaching are welcome to join the network and attend the Journal Club.
- Researcher development training: Sessions developing skills in communication and time management are also relevant to teaching.
