Committed to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity, the BRIC team (previously know as RETT) supports the University’s ambitions to create an inclusive research culture and build a pipeline of research talent. Our aim is to equip all researchers - from PGRs to Research Leaders - with the skills, expertise, environment and culture in which they and their research can flourish. We do this by working internally with colleagues in professional support and academic departments, through collaborations with external partners and stakeholders and are informed by funder expectation and global conversations.
Our team
We coordinate and create opportunities designed to support the people, culture and environment in which research takes place. This is achieved by:
- Coordinating professional and career development opportunities (including online and face to face workshops, mentoring and buddying)
- Building communities of practice and research cafes where people can share ideas and create new ways of supporting the researcher experience
- Coordinating the creation and implementation of institutional action plans to support research culture and EDI (to include the Researcher Development Concordat, HR Excellence in Research recognition)
- Supporting the next generation of Research Fellows and leaders (York Fellowship Programme)
- Creating institution and cross institutional wide events and celebrations of great research (the annual York Research Festival, Fellowship Fortnight, 3MT, PhD Spotlight)
- Signposting the resources and support available to support individuals and cohorts
- Developing and supporting grass roots project activity in support of researcher communities
In August 2024, the Research Culture Working Group launched the University of York's Research Culture Action Plan 2024-2030. The plan sets out our ambitions for building a positive research culture across the institution and is aligned with the University Research Strategy.

We will also:
- Develop ways of recognising and rewarding exceptional contributions to the research environment
- Deliver a masterclass series for those with experience to develop their practice (PGR supervisors, PIs and academics)
