Missions Work Programme

The Missions Work Programme is different to the Clusters in Pillar 2. Missions are based on an integrated portfolio of projects of different scales and types.

EC Programme Managers oversee portfolios of projects that typically include a mix of project types – from more traditional collaborative projects to prizes and financing mechanisms. Missions and their funded projects must relate to society and citizens’ needs, be highly visible and have a strong impact. They aim to deliver bold solutions to global challenges within a defined timeframe.

The ‘portfolio approach’ means that projects are expected to stretch across different disciplines and parts of Horizon Europe, and so go beyond individual projects or partnerships to create strong synergies.

2024 calls have a September closing date and cover a range of different calls and project types within each overarching Mission.

The Missions are:

  • Adaptation to Climate Change
  • Cancer
  • 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart cities by 2030
  • Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030
  • A Soil Deal for Europe

Destinations

A new Destination (rather than a full Mission) has been included in the 2024 calls: The New European Bauhaus

The New European Bauhaus aims to:

  • make Europe’s construction ecosystem the world leader in circular and regenerative approaches
  • ensure a people-centred governance of transformation processes, putting citizens, identity, belonging, cultural heritage, diversity and democracy at the centre of the green transition
  • boost public and private investments in R&I
  • support innovative funding practices and finance new business models
