York Central is a ‘once in a lifetime’ economic development opportunity for the City of York and the region. The project will transform 45 hectares of brownfield land, situated adjacent to York Railway Station, into a vibrant new quarter comprised of a new commercial district, residential neighbourhoods, cultural spaces and public realm.

The project, which will attract 6,500 new jobs, has a high number of potential touchpoints with the University, its research areas and colleagues. The Economic Development Team provides the University’s coordination support for the University’s involvement in York Central, particularly for the proposed Innovation Zone that will be developed by 2027/28 as part of Phase 1 activity. This will include a 110,000 sq. ft. ‘new build’ innovation facility at the heart of York Central.
