Revisions to Research Payments Policy
Posted on 18 December 2024
Revisions to the Policy on the Payment of Individuals for Involvement with, and Participation in, Research were approved by University Research Committee on 26 September 2024.
The Policy is accompanied by new and updated guidance for researchers, staff and members of the public.
The University 2023-2030 Research Strategy explicitly commits to expanding research participation and involvement, and the revision and updating of the payment policy to ensure it is fit for purpose, supports this ambition.
This revised policy explains why, what, when and how to pay members of the public for their involvement with, or participation in, research activity at the University.
The substantive principles of the policy remain the same. The revised version of the policy includes:
- Clearer language to define ‘involvement with’ and ‘participation in’ research
- A better explanation of the differences between the two and the principles to be followed when paying individuals for either
- A clearer position on the University’s preferred payment method and the use of vouchers
- An improved list of responsibilities for Principal Investigators (PIs) to record payment information in anticipation of an audit
- The upper limit amount has changed from £184 to £183.50p to reflect changes made by the Department for Work and Pensions and the NIHR.
The updated guidance includes:
- practical steps to follow for which forms to use
- instructions to provide to members of the public
- what to send to Accounts Payable to ensure payments are made.
