Retiring China Connect

Posted on 9 August 2024

IT Services will be retiring the China Connect service from 1 September.

The service allows students who are currently in China to connect to Google Workspace and other university services. It was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic to help students working from China but will no longer  be supported in the UK from September 2024.

IT Services have worked hard to try and find an appropriate alternative service however none are available.

Students working from China who need to access university services not usually accessible there, will now need to do this via the virtual desktop service (VDS). The VDS provides a secure way to access the applications on your University desktop as well as your filestore.

To access new messages in their university Gmail account, we are recommending that students set up email forwarding to their personal email address (please note this won’t allow them  to see messages received before forwarding was set up).

It’s also critical that any course material which needs to be shared with students in China is stored on the VLE (which is accessible in China) rather than Google Workspace.

If you have any questions about this work or using the virtual desktop service (VDS) please contact IT Services.
