First York bus ticket changes

Posted on 1 July 2024

From 14 July First York are making changes to their ticket offerings, aiming to simplify travel for all users by focusing on ticket purchases through the First Bus app, and eliminating duplicate ticket offerings on their website.

The "Tap on, Tap off" (TOTO) system will remain the best way to access the lowest fares. Prices for the Day ticket and bundles for up to 3 trips over 7 days will remain unchanged.

A number of historic ticket types are being removed from University services. This is largely due to low sales and aims to simplify the range of tickets available and avoid passenger confusion. Here are some key details:

Adults

  • Adult Single Fare: Starting at £1.50 when purchased via TOTO.
  • Day Ticket: Price remains frozen at £4.80.
  • Maximum Single Fare: Capped at £2.
  • Flexible Ticket Bundles: Prices remain unchanged.

Children and Young People

  • Single Fare for Children (under 16, unaccompanied) and Young People (16-18): £1.
  • Travel for up to Three Under-16s with a Fare-Paying Adult: Free, supported by the City of York Council under the BSIP arrangement, subject to review.

University Students - student specific fares are now available for use on routes across the city.

  • New Lower Single Fare: £1.50 on University routes only.
  • Semester Travel Option: New travel options covering the whole of the first and second semesters, applicable during term dates.
  • Free Travel Using TOTO: Available on the route between campus east and west.

These fare changes are part of First York's annual review. We remain committed to working with First York to make bus travel an affordable and sustainable option.

Full details of the changes will be available on First York’s website and the First Bus App starting Monday 1 July and will come into effect on Monday 14 July.
