Why study with us?

As a student in the Department of Sociology, you’ll learn about the world around you and the challenges faced by people in society. Exploring how sociological approaches can shed light on the most pressing issues we face today. Choose a degree in either sociology, criminology or social media; with joint study options across a range of disciplines and focus on the areas that you care about most. 

Whichever path you choose, you’ll get a solid grounding in the forces which shape society, from ideas of class, gender and ethnicity to the impacts of social media, science and technology.

There are opportunities for you to spend time abroad during your course. You'll also have the chance to take a placement year.

If you're studying at a university outside the UK, you may be able to spend up to a year in York as a visiting student.

Our facilities

The Department of Sociology is based on Campus East in the Law and Sociology Building. Modern architecture mixes with lakes, trees and wildflower meadows to create a productive learning and research environment.

The Law and Sociology building is open to students 24 hours a day. As a Sociology student, you'll have access to study spaces, our problem-based learning suite and the Sociology Lounge, which provides a space for staff and students to socialise.   

Careers

One of the biggest myths about sociology degrees is that they are non-vocational. In fact, a degree in sociology prepares you for many different roles. Our graduates have forged successful careers all over the world.

  • You’ll develop skills in problem-solving, evaluating evidence, forming reasoned arguments, thinking creatively, and considering different viewpoints.
