Funding amount: fee waiver* + £4,050 stipend (paid in quarterly instalments)
*The scholarship covers a fee waiver at the home or international tuition fee rate.

The Maria Bourboulis scholarship fund is awarded in memory of York Alumna Maria Bourboulis to continue to support students in either Social Policy and Social Work or Sociology. Applications are invited from highly qualified and motivated applicants to take up this MA scholarship opportunity.
One scholarship is awarded each year to a Masters student in either the School of Business and Society or the Department of Sociology.
Please visit the School of Business and Society website to check which of their degree programmes are eligible and their application process.
The process below is for applicants to programmes in the Department of Sociology.
Eligibility and availability
In order to be eligible you must:
- Have applied for place a on a full time Masters course on one of the following courses at the Department of Sociology:
- Begin your Masters studies in September 2023 (it is not possible to defer a scholarship offer)
- Have or expect to obtain a first or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent prior to commencing the Masters programme:
Preferential - to honour the memory of Maria Bourboulis, we anticipate that the recipient of the scholarship will explore in their independent research study (dissertation) historical and contemporary social and welfare problems in Southern Europe.
English language
If English is not your first language, you should also read the English Language requirements for postgraduate study.
Application procedure
First, you will need to submit a formal Masters application for your preferred Masters programme through the University’s online application system.
Second, you must also provide a 200 word statement about the usefulness of the scholarship in order to achieve your goals. If you have applied for one of the Masters programmes in the Department of Sociology listed above, please email your statement to: sociology-pgt@york.ac.uk. The deadline for submitting applications and emailing your statement is 4pm (BST) on Friday, 30 June 2023.
A committee formed by the Head of Graduate School in Social Policy and Social Work and the Chair of Graduate School in Sociology will determine the successful recipient.
Terms and conditions
Successful candidates will be sent a formal letter confirming the offer of the scholarship. The letter sets out the value and duration of the award. The letter asks candidates to accept the Terms of the Scholarship.
For scholarships with stipends
Award holders receive the balance as a cash bursary that will be paid directly into their preferred bank account.
For all scholarships and studentships
Continued receipt of all Scholarship is conditional upon satisfactory academic progress. Scholarship holders should notify their Department in the following circumstances:
- you take leave of absence
- you change your programme of study
- your registration status changes (e.g. Full time to part time)
- you withdraw from your programme
