On May 9th, CURB had the very great pleasure of welcoming Jonathan Meades to York, where heread from his autobiography, An Encyclopaedia of Myself. Geoff Wall from the English department led a discussion after the book reading, in which questions ranged from Meades’s approach to the genre, the influence of literary modernism on his writing style, and his thoughts on the York campus (…he likes the original buildings and design). For those who haven’t read the book, we thoroughly recommend it, for its portrait of a particular place (Salisbury) in a particular era (1950s). Amongst its many other qualities, this is an example of writing about English landscapes (and the varieties of Englishness they host) at its finest.
