Adam joined the Department in October 2021. His PhD examines the political implications of our socially constructed notions of ‘elites’. Before starting the PhD, Adam was programme manager at the Research on Research Institute (RORI) and Wellcome Trust.
Adam’s thesis project involves a programme of semi-structured interviews with residents of the so-called ‘Red Wall’ of historically-Labour supporting towns in the North of England.
Participants are asked who they consider to be ‘the elite’ in British society, and to reflect on how they came to hold those views. The project hopes to shed light on how subjective notions of the elite are mobilised by populist movements. Findings from Adam’s thesis were published by the International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society.
Adam works as a Graduate Teaching Assistant on the department’s Introduction to Sociological Theory module.
