Deepfake video guidance

Understanding and identifying deepfake videos

Deepfake videos use artificial intelligence to create manipulated or entirely fabricated video content that appears real. While this technology can be used creatively, it can be exploited to spread misinformation or impersonate individuals. Recognising and addressing the impact of deepfakes is essential in maintaining trust in digital media.

As a UK higher education institution that publishes large quantities of digital media, we are aware we may be a target for deepfake videos. Below is some advice and guidance on how to identify and deal with deepfakes.

How to identify deepfake videos

Detecting deepfakes can be challenging, but the following tips can help:

  • Look for unnatural facial movements: Deepfakes may struggle with realistic blinking, lip-syncing, or facial expressions.
  • Pay attention to inconsistencies: Lighting mismatches, blurry edges or strange distortions around the face or neck could indicate manipulation.
  • Analyse audio quality: Speech in deepfake videos may sound robotic, mismatched or lack natural intonations.
  • Cross-reference the content: If a video seems suspicious, compare it with reliable sources or check if it has been reported by credible outlets.

Accessing official accounts and verified content

To ensure you're engaging with genuine and credible information, always refer to:

  • Official University channels: Check our verified website and social media accounts for updates and announcements.
  • Trusted news outlets: Use established and reputable news organisations for breaking stories and current events.
  • Fact-checking resources: Some news outlets run fact checking services such as BBC Reality Check or The FactCheck blog run by Channel 4 News. Full Fact is an independent fact-checking charity based in the UK .

If you suspect a video to be a deepfake, please report it to the digital platform for investigation. Staying informed and cautious will help combat the spread of misleading content.
