Sex Work: connecting research, policy and practice

This event will provide practitioners with access to two researchers with track records in connecting research to practice.  Sex work is at the heart of Rosie Campbell's and Kate Brown's current research focus and specifically issues of safety, violence, policing and crimes/hate crimes in the context of the lived, diverse and intersectional experiences of sex workers. 

Rosie’s PhD., ‘Not getting away with it: treating crimes against sex workers as hate crime in Merseyside’ was the first academic study of this innovative approach which had led to increased levels of reporting of crime to the police by sex workers and convictions at unprecedented levels in the UK, with greatly improved police-sex worker community relations.  

Rosie is currently involved in sharing learning about the sex work and hate crime approach with police, sex work projects, practitioners and policy makers in other areas of the UK.   

Kate's work focuses on care and control of vulnerable groups. She is currently leading an N8 policing research study reviewing the impact and effectiveness the specialist Sex Work Liaison Officer role within West Yorkshire Police. The research explores good practice models within the police which can support moves towards safer working conditions and justice for sex workers.

At today’s event Kate will introduce preliminary findings from early stages of the study and also reflect on wider implications for practice focussed on protecting and supporting vulnerable groups within the criminal justice system.
