PhD students: Invitation to apply for awards

Once again ReCSS is delighted to be able to offer these awards to PhD students. These awards are designed to encourage interdisciplinary engagement and related activities by doctoral students in the Social Sciences. It is hoped that these will encourage students to work across departments, to take an interest in event organisation and to raise their profile in related research and engagement activity.

Awards of up to £600 can be requested by students from at least two different Social Sciences departments, we envisage an upper limit of around four awards being made depending on overall demand. A maximum of one page of 12pt single-spaced font should be sent to rcss-admin@york.ac.uk by Monday, 12 December 2016 covering the following:

i. Title
ii. Name of lead applicant (contact for this award)
iii. Description of project and rationale for the application
iv. Costs in brief
v. Dates and desired location of events/activities,
vi. List of students and departments involved in the application
vii. Supporting paragraph from the lead applicant's supervisor

Monies can be used to cover travel, lunches/dinner/drinks and related expenses, but not student/staff time and costs. Awards must be spent in full by 31 July 2017.

The following are encouraged in applications under this scheme but creative ideas are welcomed:

Invitations to key speakers to speak at a specially convened seminar or mini-conference.
Use of ReCSS meeting rooms.Engagement with disciplines outside the Social Sciences.
Engagement with external organisations – seminars, meetings, collaborations, data/results sharing.
Short research initiatives where funding can be used to assist in related costs of collaboration such as costs of transcription, travel to meet other academics.
Website or other development of tools or resources with a public presence or research application.
Other creative uses of resources that establish links or activities with groups and institutions outside the university or which bring such groups onto the campus.
