Wednesday 2 September 2015, 4.00PM to 6:00PM
Speaker(s): Dr Marcia Johnson, Centre for Tertiary Teaching & Learning at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand and Visiting Fellow, Research Centre for the Social Sciences
This presentation will describe case study findings from a qualitative research project into threshold concepts (TCs) in the New Zealand tertiary education context. The curriculum focus was doctoral writing – specifically the places where students get “stuck” and are unable to make writing progress – with a view to helping both students and supervisors better understand writing and supervisory needs. Interview and survey data were collected from students and supervisors based in New Zealand, Canada, and the UK. The presentation will be based on the supervisors’ data and will discuss implications for supervisory practice, writing support and student skills development within doctoral education.
Dr Marcia Johnson is the Director of the Centre for Tertiary Teaching & Learning at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. Coming from a background in Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics, Marcia has conducted research in Canada, Japan and New Zealand into the potential of technology to transform tertiary teaching and learning processes. More recently, she has researched threshold concepts in doctoral writing with a view to better understanding and supporting doctoral students and their supervisors.
