A day in the life of a Logistics Engineer in the United Kingdom

Excellence, teamwork and pushing boundaries

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work at McLaren, a world-leading technology and automotive company known for:
''No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. - McLaren''
McLaren exists to create breathtaking performance road cars. And deliver the most thrilling driving experiences imaginable.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we design.

Pioneering new technology. Breaking industry norms. Pushing the envelope in speed, performance and dynamic engineering. This approach has created cars with astounding track performance that are astonishingly easy to drive on the road. (McLaren website)

What do you do?

As a Logistics Engineer at McLaren, my role focuses on ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of materials across the production line, supply chain, and engineering functions. I work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve logistics bottlenecks, optimize inventory management, and improve operational processes.
My responsibilities: Include planning material movements, coordinating with suppliers, and implementing logistics solutions to enhance efficiency and minimize delays. By leveraging data-driven insights, I help streamline workflows and ensure production targets are met on time.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

My passion for engineering and logistics began early, inspired by my father’s work with engines and my curiosity about how things function. This led me to pursue a Masters in Engineering Management at the University of York, where I specialized in logistics and project management. My academic journey, coupled with hands-on experience optimizing supply chains and implementing ERP systems, solidified my desire to work in high-performance automotive logistics. McLaren has always been my dream company, and now that I am here, I am excited to contribute my skills and passion to such an innovative and dynamic environment.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Initially, I started my career as a Project Engineer in a manufacturing and installation company, where I gained hands-on experience in engineering processes and project execution. However, over time, my interest in management and logistics grew, leading me to pursue a Masters in Engineering Management. This shift allowed me to develop expertise in supply chain optimization, project management, and process improvement, ultimately guiding me towards my current role as a Logistics Engineer at McLaren.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Every day at McLaren is exciting and fulfilling as we contribute to building some of the most breathtaking performance cars—the perfect blend of beauty and beast.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Yes, challenges are a key part of my role, making it both exciting and rewarding. Ensuring a seamless flow of materials in a high-performance automotive environment like McLaren requires precision, real-time problem-solving, and effective coordination across teams.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

At McLaren, the culture is built on excellence, teamwork, and pushing boundaries to create world-class performance cars, making every day both challenging and inspiring.
I work with one of the best teams under the umbrella of the manufacturing department, where collaboration, innovation, and precision drive everything we do.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I encourage students to use York's free learning resources and LinkedIn Learning access - it's a powerful tool for career growth!

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

1. Get certified while studying - professional certifications alongside your degree make you stand out.
2. Take on real projects - my York projects gave me practical examples for interviews.
3. Network actively - use LinkedIn and York's career events. As an international student, connections matter.
