A day in the life of a Finance Graduate in the United Kingdom
Studying for CIMA qualification while on 3 year finance grad scheme. Yorkshire based
How my studies have helped my career
A lot of my university studies have been highly relevant to my CIMA qualification, however an economics degree certainly wasn't a prerequisite for the job - I have colleagues who are on the same programme as me but did psychology and law degrees.
What surprised me about my career so far
The amount of opportunity presented to me as a graduate is unbelievable - it's not unusual to find yourself working with the senior leadership of the business on a daily basis.
My advice about working in my industry
Be prepared to work hard, it certainly isn't easy balancing a professional qualification with work. If you're willing to put in the effort, however, the rewards are yours to take.
The grocery retail sector is also very fast moving and is undergoing a lot of change so be open minded, and quick to adapt to the change.
Other advice
Always say yes to opportunities presented to you - you'll learn the most from those which are hardest, and those which you hated!

What I do
As a finance graduate, I study for my CIMA qualification whilst working full time at Morrisons head office in Bradford. The graduate scheme is three years long, in which time I gain professional experience in the world of finance by completing three one year placements in different areas of the business.
My first placement was in Marketing and Customer - Commercial Finance, and my second placement is in Risk & Internal Audit.
What I like most
The fact that every day presents a different challenge - I'm never bored at work!
What I like least
The hours can be long, especially at period and year ends. Studying for CIMA after working long hours can sometimes take an awful lot of willpower!
