A day in the life of a Corporate solicitor in the United Kingdom

Corporate solicitor advising on corporate transactions

How I looked for work

I undertook a vacation scheme at Addleshaw Goddard (amongst other firms) in 2009 and secured a training contract to begin 2012. I then trained at Addleshaw Goddard and moved to my current firm on qualification (with a secondment to Volkswagen in the middle of my training)

The recruitment process

Recruitment to get onto the legal ladder is now a case of various applications and interviews before securing a vacation scheme. This is essentially work experience and an interview rolled into one. Once that is completed and you secure a training contract, it is onto law school for a year (or two) and then the training process begins.

My career goals when I graduated

Become a solicitor and move up the ladder

What I do

I advise on a wide range of corporate transactions, predominantly involving the sale or purchase of companies but also reorganisations of large groups and investments by funds into companies.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Attention to detail and clarity of communication are key. Trying to explain everything you do in simple straightforward language whilst ensuring it is accurate ticks both of these boxes and is something which requires a lot of practice.

What I like most

A lot of the transactions I work on can end up being widely publicised, in particular the work I do with football clubs.

What I like least

As a corporate solicitor, availability is key and so it might sometimes be a case of waiting until late at night or getting in very early to take an urgent call from a client (or just simply that wherever they are in the world it is a reasonable hour to make a phone call)

What surprised me most

The pace of work. Generally speaking it is faster paced than most other jobs, but from time to time in quiet periods I end up reading more Daily Mail online than is healthy.
