A day in the life of a Associate Director in the United Kingdom

Mathematical skills being well used in real life applications as a transport consultant in York

My career history

I have worked within the same company for 12 years, progressing from a Graduate Consultant (G7) to Associate Director (G3). I have worked in the York, Leeds and St Albans offices.

Courses taken since graduation

I have completed an MSc(Eng) in Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering at Leeds University ITS.

What I do

I work as a transport consultant, leading the Traffic Engineering team in York, working closely with teams in Leeds, Newcastle and across the country. Job responsibilities range from bidding for jobs to the management and delivery of projects within agreed budgets and timescales, working alongside traffic engineers, transport planners and other disciplines. I also manage and mentor junior staff members.

My technical specialisms are traffic modelling and traffic signals, which are built upon my mathematical studies at York. Typically projects will involve the development and assessment of schemes which may be focussed on measures for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, capacity or safety.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Day to day I use a wide range of skills, from project, financial and people management to more technical and analytical subjects. Some skills are built upon my studies at York and the MSc(Eng) I undertook at Leeds ITS (which was funded by my company) - such as analysis and modelling. Other skills have either been developed on the job or through work based training courses.

What I like most

I like the 'real life' application of my mathematical skills and enjoy the variety of work I am exposed to. Projects vary enormously in both size and location. I have worked extensively within Yorkshire, London and across the country, on small and large engineering projects and events planning for things such as London 2012 and 2016 Rio Games. Being employed by a global company can also provide overseas opportunities.

I enjoy the opportunity to mix technical and professional development, work with a lot of people from very different backgrounds across the country and the chance I get to develop and mentor junior staff members.

What surprised me most

During my time as a student I wasn't at all aware of this industry - stumbling across it by chance during my job search - or that there were opportunities for graduates without engineering backgrounds in this field.
