My career goals when I graduated

To gain a job in children's publishing and work up the editorial career ladder.

My career history

Whilst studying I completed editorial work experience placements at Faber and Faber, Make Believe Ideas and Penguin (Ladybird and Viking).

After graduating I undertook work experience and an internship at Bonnier Publishing which helped me secure my first job as UK Group Sales and Operations Assistant within the same company. I have now moved across into the editorial department, working as an assistant editor.

What has helped my career to progress

Being enthusiastic, helpful and friendly; asking questions and showing an interest in what others are doing; taking any opportunity to learn more about the publishing industry

Courses taken since graduation

Data Warehouse training. The sales department use Data Warehouse to create sales reports.

How my studies have helped my career

Analysing patterns in data strengthened my attention to detail, a skill I use everyday when checking title information and proofreading.

What surprised me about my career so far

How everyone knows one another in the publishing world; how many people and processes are involved in the making of a book

Where I hope to be in 5 years

An editor in children's publishing.

My advice about working in my industry

Get work experience and keep up to date with publishing trends by reading The Bookseller and using Twitter and Instagram.

What I do

Proofreading; researching new book ideas; market research; sending material to the sales team; updating title information on Biblio; admin

Strong attention to detail and English Language skills (proofreading; checking data); creativity and artistic skills (researching and developing new book ideas)
