Critical thought, writing and the synthesis of historical sources, found in archives in the UK and overseas.
Why I continued studying
The prospect of independent research.
What my course is like
My PhD in film involves critical thought, writing and the synthesis of historical sources, found in archives in the UK and overseas.
How I have funded my studies
Arts and Humanities Research Council scholarship (2015-2018)
What I like most
Research. The PhD isn't just about independent research, but this activity can lead to a range of outputs such as conferences and teaching.
What I like least
Getting very peckish while studying (a perennial problem).
What surprised me most
The PhD involves very specialist research. However, you are often prompted to think about the nature of knowledge in the broadest sense.
My advice to students considering further study
Choose a topic that you are happy and willing to spend three years researching. Take a break from academia before starting your PhD if you feel you need more time to work on a research proposal.
