A day in the life of a Graduate Management Trainee in the United Kingdom
Enjoy being able to apply broad knowledge from my degrees
My advice to students considering work
I know it's easier said than done - but try not to stress too much about it. Enjoy university and the process of applications - it's a learning experience so don't take any set-backs personally.
My advice about working in my industry
Look at Institute of Railway Operators student events. Talk to staff on train stations about their job and see if it's for you!
Contacting me
I'm happy to talk to you if you're in your final year and/or if you're considering a career in the railway, I'm happy to answer any questions. If you need advice about job applications in general, I'm sure I can help or at least point you in the right direction.
What I do
I'm a graduate management trainee with First Group.
What I like most
The railway industry is a fast growing, highly dynamic, and challenging environment to work in. However, I enjoy being able to apply broad knowledge from my degrees - during union or stakeholder meetings, for example. I enjoy knowing the social impact the industry has on everyday life. More importantly, I enjoy knowing there is exceptional potential within the industry to develop itself and help people move safer and faster in an increasingly congested world.
What surprised me most
The steep learning curve
