My advice to students considering work
As a non-law student, I know the first steps into the legal industry can be daunting. My best advice would be approach the process the confidence. Think about the skills you can offer, apply for and gain as much experience as you can (Open Days are a great way to do this) and brush up on your knowledge of the corporate sector. There are some fantastic guides in the University Library as well as the Legal Press online (see 'Lawyer2B, Legal Week and the Financial Times) and magazines in Careers. Your degree will always be relevant if you have the skills the firm are looking for.
Other advice
Make use of contacts along the way. Get to know other students who are applying, speak to trainees and don't be afraid to get in contact with them afterwards, and always attend networking sessions. It's not about being 'noticed' but about gathering as much information as you can.

What I do
During the summer holidays of my 2nd year, I undertook a 'Vacation Scheme' or three-week work placement with a Corporate Law Firm in London. During the scheme, I had the opportunity to experience current legal cases, take part in skills based sessions and network with current employees and trainees at the firm.
What I like most
A Vacation Scheme was a fantastic way to establish that law was the right career for me. The exposure to real work and opportunity to assist lawyers in producing client work was invaluable.
