Anyone, anything
What I do
Mechanical Engineer at Rutherford Appleton Labs. Worked on designing new specialist equipment for the Astra Gemini laser there. Work involved using Solid Edge ST2 to design the equipment, and then contacting suppliers to get the cheapest/best materials for construction.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Design and creativity skills, to come up with a initial design of a product which would solve the problems facing me. Initiative and communication, to seek out help when required and contact different people. Self management, as I was just given a deadline for the project and had to set my own timetable. Computing skills, working with a new piece of CAD software, SE ST2.
Financial skills, finding the best material that would still work in the product, but be cheap enough for manufacture.
What I like most
The new experiences and the freedom in designing the product. Also the fact I had to book meetings with people around the centre to ask for expertise or assistance was a new experience.
What I like least
The lack of strict deadlines that means I never knew if I was doing enough work or not.
What surprised me most
The communication between everyone. I had meetings almost every day with new people.
