A day in the life of a Senior Parliamentary Advisor in the United Kingdom

Senior Parliamentary Advisor at the RSPCA

How I looked for work

Directly on the charity website. I knew I wanted to work for them so kept looking (and unsuccessfully applying) until something suitable came up, which was my previous role in the campaigns team. Because I was interested in politics (and had that in my background) I was allowed to develop the role to include some political work and, when a vacancy arose in the team full time, moved over into it.

How I found out about the job

Employer's website

The recruitment process

Standard written application and just one interview.

My career goals when I graduated

I had none!

My career history

I've worked for a political party in two different roles (campaigns and membership) before moving to the RSPCA in a campaigns role and eventually ending up in public affairs.

What has helped my career to progress

Experience, experience, experience. And the fact that the jobs I've had have all had really broad skill set.

Courses taken since graduation

Lots on campaigns, digital skills and influencing.

My advice to students considering work

Don't be disheartened by rejections - they're inevitable but the right job is out there!

My advice about working in my industry

It's hard, it's poorly paid and it can be stressful/upsetting at times but if you love the cause then you'll love it.

Contacting me

Quite happy to answer any questions from anyone looking to get into the political or charity sectors, or non-profits more generally.

What I do

Manage relationships between the RSPCA and politicians, including MPs, Peers and local government.

Skills I use and how I developed them

This role is all about communication and building relationships. The workload is incredibly varied and busy so you need to be organised as well.

What I like most

The variety, and working for a cause.

What I like least

The bureaucracy of working in such a big organisation.

What surprised me most

Just how many issues you have to become an expert on. And how quickly!
