A day in the life of a Communications Executive in the United Kingdom

Watching TV at work, developing brand strategy

How I looked for work

Directly on broadcasters' websites.

How I found out about the job

Employer's website

The recruitment process

I sent in a CV and cover letter then was called in for a competency interview. I was then called back for a second interview where I had to give a presentation.

My career goals when I graduated

Work for a broadcaster.

My career history

I worked part-time in the Student Recruitment Department at York, as well as at IT company Trustmarque Solutions. Both were through the Student Internship Bureau - part of the Careers Service. When I graduated I worked at a marketing agency managing campaigns for a broadcaster.

What has helped my career to progress

Starting at a really small company and being forced to take on extra responsibilities.

Courses taken since graduation

None

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I only just started and am still finding my feet, but a senior planning and strategy role really appeals to me.

My advice to students considering work

Watch lots of TV and keep up to date with the industry.

Contacting me

Feel free to contact me about working in TV or marketing.

What I do

I work on the marketing team at Nickelodeon, promoting shows like SpongeBob SquarePants

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Writing, which I developed through my degree and involvement with York Vision. I also learnt important social media skills through York Vision and my internship at Student Recruitment. Soft skills like teamwork and time management I picked up from a range of experiences, particularly York Vision and York Award courses. Marketing also requires me to be creative and think of new ideas, which I definitely learnt from having to think outside the box when it came to writing essays. Again, I developed this skill through York Vision, as having to constantly push out articles required me to come up with new concepts on a weekly basis.

What I like most

Watching TV at work, developing brand strategy

What I like least

Nothing!
