A day in the life of a Flood Risk & Partnerships Officer in the United Kingdom
Recent mature student graduate in the Environment sector
My career goals when I graduated
I wanted a job which gave a tangible and real life benefit, which I am fortunate to have.
My career history
Prior to university I worked in Finance doing a range of jobs. I especially enjoyed the Business Continuity aspect. After university I joined the Environment Agency in the role I have now. However, I am now progressing onto more definate role rather than helping out to the whole team.
What has helped my career to progress
I am determined and I ask colleagues for a range of work, if i can help them with their project etc. Using my initiative had helped a lot.
Courses taken since graduation
Hostile situations training, water safety training, emergency first aid at work. These courses are core training but unfortunately didn't happen until after the 2015 flood event when they would have come in useful.
I've have also done some additional GIS training to improve my skills.
How my studies have helped my career
I wouldn't have been able to do/get this job without my degree. My knowledge of the environment specifically helps
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I want to be a senior staff member in flood risk working on project delivery and strategic overview
My advice to students considering work
Your dream job won't necessarily be the first one, or the second one. See each job appointment as an opportunity to learn skills for your dream job.
My advice about working in my industry
It can be about who you know, not what you know sometimes. Networking is really important and keeping up with latest developments.
Contacting me
I'm available for mentoring. Ask me questions about my work, my experience and anything really.
What I do
I create bespoke maps for a variety of people and parts of the business. I have an incident role for when there are flooding or environmental issues locally. I'm now getting involved in partnerships working with Local Authorities and Internal Drainage Boards
Skills I use and how I developed them
I use GIS daily and learned this during my degree. My knowledge of the environment, climate change and hot topics also helps greatly.
What I like most
The workload is incredibly varied and I can get involved in most projects easily. There's a breadth of expertise who I can learn from and work alongside
What I like least
My current position is temporary, which I dislike.
What surprised me most
I thought I would be working on basic admin or tasks others didn't want to do when, in fact, I'm really enjoying my work and it is important work which makes a difference
