A day in the life of a Consultant in the United Kingdom
I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I graduated which was actually a really great mindset to have when I started work - I didn’t have a preconceived idea of what life would be like so I could just enjoy it as it was.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
An international specialist bid consultancy company who manage and write bids, support solution design and aid in contract mobilisation.
What do you do?
I started out as a bid writer and am now moving more into the solution design side of the business. This involves:
• Writing compelling bids
• Conducting research into relevant policy or potential solution ideas
• Managing projects and stakeholder relationships
• Supporting solution design.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do - consultancy offers a varied workload with a range of different projects and clients in in diverse industries.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I graduated which was actually a really great mindset to have when I started work - I didn’t have a preconceived idea of what life would be like so I could just enjoy it as it was.
Describe your most memorable day at work
One of my most memorable days was when I gave my first presentation to the team. The graduate intake had been given projects to research and present on - I was so nervous because I wasn’t clear on the expectations and kept comparing myself against others. In the end, it went great and my presentation was so pretty I’ve become a defacto graphic designer within the team asked to consult on graphics produced for bids/solution design and get requests to make presentations pretty.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I found York Community Consulting really useful and it definitely influenced me to pursue consultancy as a career. Beind a Committee member of Dog Society was also a great way to build my confidence and softer skill set which is invaluable in my work.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Don’t stress about it - a lot of life is outside your control. You’re going to get rejected and it’s not personal at all. You just have to keep picking yourself up until you find something that sticks.
