A day in the life of a Executive Officer in the United Kingdom
During my time at university and coming from a socially mobile background, I started the university's first student led social mobility society on campus called The 93% Club York.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work as a Policy Advisor for the Department of Education
What do you do?
I currently support government departments execute post-18 education policies and often liaise with government legal teams too.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
During my time at university and coming from a socially mobile background, I started the university's first student led social mobility society on campus called The 93% Club York. I have always had the ambition to improve the educational experiences of those around based on my own experiences prior to university. My passion in this has steered me to pursue a role where I can make a positive change especially for students!
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Nope!
Describe your most memorable day at work
Shadowing the Permanent Secretary for the Department of Education! Very exciting and interesting!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
I often felt a huge amount of imposter syndrome having starting my role straight after university. It can be a daunting experience but I have always been welcomed by my team and my contribution has always been appreciated!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
It is a hybrid working environment which is great balance between working from home and the office.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
During my time at university, I took on various committee roles including starting my own society during lockdown. I was also appointed as Chief of Staff in 2020 for The 93 Club Foundation which is one the UK's largest social mobility charity. I have most certainly learnt an array of skills including leadership, organisation and resilience.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Hopefully pursue a law conversion course to become a lawyer in the City where I can make an more active role in encouraging D&I initiatives and become senior in the UK's Social Mobility Commission.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Always be your authentic self and believe in your own merits and achievements. Regardless of how small they might seem, they deserved to be celebrated. And always learn from setbacks!
