A day in the life of a Content & Campaigns Manager in the United Kingdom

I always wanted to work within content creation and marketing but was unsure my Psychology degree would sit with other applicants with marketing and business degrees.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

An E-Commerce start-up based in Central London. It's a social network for hobbyists as well as a store for all art and craft supplies.

What do you do?

I'm the Content & Campaigns Manager. I work within the marketing team to manage our content and campaigns calendar, crafting copy for the site, leading on brand executions as well as managing a team of social media execs, content creators and copywriters.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

It was both a mix of my interest in the Psychology of marketing as well as my outside interests of content creation.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I always wanted to work within content creation and marketing but was unsure my Psychology degree would sit with other applicants with marketing and business degrees. However, I still pursued marketing-related jobs after graduation as it was an area I was still highly interested in.

Describe your most memorable day at work

My most memorable day has to be the day I was offered a permanent position at the company. After a 6 month internship, I was keen to stay with the company in a more senior, full-time role. It was great to see 6-months of hard work pay off and be able to progress to a higher level.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Project managing a team within a company can be difficult especially when everyone has different goals and objectives for their team. It's challenging to bring everyone together under a shared interest across departments to come up with positive solutions and an organised campaign.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

There is a great social environment within the office. With a social and charity committee within the team, there are always ways to get involved in creative workshops, pub quizzes and after work drinks!

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I own and run a lifestyle blog which I kept up throughout university. This gave me a lot of the skills that led to me gaining my current position. With this, I also wrote for the university's music magazine which helped build my communication through interviewing artists. I also had a part-time job in a local pub which definitely encouraged me to build my interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I would love to develop a deeper understanding of brand building and storytelling.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

1. Look further than your degree - use the skills you've built outside your lectures to enhance your CV.
2. Be as involved as you can with group projects, lectures and debates to really build your confidence, creativity and forward-thinking.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Marketing, SEO, copywriting, project management, influencer marketing, content management, content strategy, people management,
