A day in the life of a Digital Media Manager in the United Kingdom
From internship to permanent role managing all social media content
My career history
I have had jobs in the past in Web Content editing and management.
My advice to students considering work
Market all your skills and experience, not just your academic credentials. A lot of the things I did outside of my degree as hobbies or part-time work have become integral in my role. Also optimise your LinkedIn profile, as many employers will look you up on there.
My advice about working in my industry
Keep up to date with current trends in social media and design. These fields are constantly changing but there are invaluable resources online which will help you! Also keeping a blog and social media accounts of your own definitely helps.
What I do
I manage all the social media content for the business, which involves monitoring profiles; keeping up to date with current articles to post; creating graphics; writing blog posts; delegating content creation to colleagues. This also involves strategic planning, and data analysis to hone in on what's working and what isn't.
I also do print and digital design to support the overall marketing efforts of the business.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Communication skills, both verbal and written; graphic design using Photoshop and InDesign etc; strategic planning; campaign management; data analysis.
What I like most
It's incredibly dynamic, every day involves doing slightly different things, and I get to be really creative which I enjoy.
