A day in the life of a Trainee Clinical Scientist (Genomics) in the United Kingdom
NHS Scientist Training Programme
My career history
I started at a DNA profiling company working in forensics/relationship analysis after graduating. I worked here for 5 years in a variety of lab/interpretation roles. This was a great graduate entry job with many fresh graduates working in the industry.
I then worked as a Lab Manager for a Virology diagnostics lab for 2 years.
What has helped my career to progress
Having a good attitude and being proactive in taking things on/helping others/improving processes helped me gain several promotions at the DNA profiling company I worked at.
For interviews, I prep by researching the company and putting thought into a few examples of when I've shown key competencies.
Courses taken since graduation
Online Genomics courses on Coursera - helped keep my knowledge up to date and show enthusiasm to potential employers for the field.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Registered Clinical Scientist.
My advice about working in my industry
If interested in the NHS STP Programme:
- Attend open days (usually in Jan)
- Try visit relevant hospital departments
This gives a good insight into the career, and also shows enthusiasm/motivation which the recruitment process is heavily focused on.
What I do
This is a graduate scheme in the NHS where you train for 3 years to get registered as a Clinical Scientist in a particular specialism. You work at a hospital and also study for a Masters qualification alongside. My specialism is Genomics, this involves analysing patient test results for Genetic conditions and liasing with clinicians.
