My career history
In my earlier academic summers I did the NCS scheme and was subsequently selected for their Leaders programme. In 2014, I worked for a pharmaceutical company as an Interim Pharmaceutical Covigilance Assistant; I managed and implemented a project to agree and put in place tailored pharmacovigilance contracts with each of the company's international distributors to ensure that they were compliant with EU regulation. In 2015, I taught horse-riding at a summer camp in Maine, USA.
What has helped my career to progress
I would say the most important factors in my career progression have been ensuring that each summer I have had a valuable experience and being proactive in thinking about the next summer.

How my studies have helped my career
My degree has been key in allowing me to apply for internships and will be crucial in applying for graduate roles come September.
My advice to students considering work
I would, with near certainty, not have the internship that I have now had I not dedicated significant amounts of time during my first-year summer to preparing my CV, thinking about possible career paths and which companies I wanted to apply to. Applications for internships open and close very early in second-year (September/ October) and many people miss them.

What I do
Strategy Consulting Analyst
Day-to-day work varied significantly intern to intern, as it does analyst to analyst, due to the variety between projects and clients and subsequently, approach. Therefore, this would not necessarily be the experience of another intern.
My role at Monitor Deloitte consisted of four key activities:
1. Research: conducting and writing-up critical research for deliverables upon which our analysis was based.
2. Interviews: scheduling, conducting and writing-up interviews with leading companies in a relevant industry.
3. Deliverable: conducted research, wrote narrative and implemented feedback on a deliverable for the client.
4. Collating separate deliverables: responsible for creating and maintaining the master report.
I also attended client meetings and proof-read deliverables.
Skills I use and how I developed them
During the internship, I got much better at conducting research. I can now produce compelling evidence, from a high quality source in a shorter period of time. I also improved at presenting my findings in a concise and compelling way.
What I like most
The sense of problem-solving and value-adding and the structured thinking around a problems were my favourite aspects of my internship.
What surprised me most
The level of cross-fertilisation of ideas, skills and experiences across teams, I had imagined a much more siloed work environment.
