A day in the life of a Mental Health Volunteer in Sri Lanka
Gained valuable experience as a volunteer in mental health settings in Sri Lanka
My advice to students considering work
I'd advise any student who wants to work within mental health to gain as much experience as you can.

Happy to answer questions about SLV's mental health placement.
What I do
I volunteered with SLV in Sri Lanka, working in mental health hospitals and community centres to provide stimulating activities to individuals with mental health issues and special needs. I also taught English to people of varying ages from pre-school up to middle-aged adults.
Skills I use and how I developed them
-Communication skills were very important as there was often a language barrier. Non-verbal skills such as using facial expressions and hand gestures were developed in order to communicate effectively with clients.
-Creativity and team work were also developed and used as working alongside other volunteers to plan and carry out new exciting activities was required.
What I like most
Being able to leave each session knowing you had made a difference.
