A day in the life of a Intern in Technology and Operations in the United Kingdom

Technology and Operations (T&O) Intern at Santander

How I looked for work

I started to look for internship and graduate roles during the Autumn term of my second year at university. Initially, I used websites such as Target Jobs to identify what jobs roles were on offer to graduates. Once I had a better idea of what job roles I was interested in, I looked on the specific employer's websites. This is important as sometimes the information relating to specific application deadlines/job requirements on Target Jobs and other websites like this can be out-of-date or inaccurate.

The recruitment process

I applied to the Santander internship programme early in the Spring Term of my second year at university. This involved initially completing an online application form which required me to upload a CV and complete a Situational Judgement Test. Following this, I was invited to complete an online numerical reasoning test. After this, I received an email informing me that I had been invited to a telephone interview. This telephone interview was thirty minutes long and consisted of questions relating to why I wanted to work at Santander and why I wanted to work in T&O in particular. There were also several competency questions such as 'tell me about a time when you have demonstrated leadership skills.' Next, I was invited to an assessment centre in London. This day was split into three parts. The first task was a group assessment to assess your ability to work in a team. The second task was an individual interview with two members of staff from T&O. The last task was an individual presentation. We were given thirty minutes to analyse a range of information and produce a ten minute presentation of this business topic. I was then informed the following week that I had been successful.

What I do

Within the Technology and Operations (T&O) division at Santander, I worked in the Wealth and Insurance department. In this team, I supported current projects through a range of different tasks. For example, I created requirements documents for IT and I also supported organising and structuring meetings with internal and external stakeholders.

Skills I use and how I developed them

In my role, I developed strong team work skills as most tasks required me to communicate with others to pull together relevant information and reach necessary conclusions.

What I like most

I have enjoyed working with a diverse range of people (both other interns and employees) whilst completing my internship.

What I like least

It is difficult to predict what your work load will be due to the changing business needs. Some days, I did not have much to do and then on others days it was quite hectic and I had a lot to manage.

What surprised me most

There is a very flat organisational structure at Santander which means that you will be given real responsibility from very early on in your job role.
