A day in the life of a Summer Intern in CIB UK Pilot Client Coverage Team in the United Kingdom

Summer intern in corporate banking

How I looked for work

I knew I wanted to do an internship in Corporate Banking so I compiled a list of the banks offering internships in the UK. Searched through them and narrowed down the list of banks to those who offer internships in Corporate Banking. I then applied to those banks and utilised all the resources online i.e. wikijob, the student room etc to ensure I was prepared for each step of the application process.

How I found out about the job

Employer's website

The recruitment process

Online Application --> Numerical and Verbal Reasoning Tests --> Assessment Centre (Hour-long interview with three senior bankers)

The application and online tests were pretty straightforward and similar to those you would complete for any other internship in banking. The interview combined a range of competency based and technical questions.

Example of competency based questions I faced:
1. What are your 3 biggest strengths/weaknesses?
2. Give an example of when you've demonstrated leadership

Example of technical based questions I faced:
1. Name a FTSE 100 stock you buy/sell and why.
2. What do you think are the biggest obstacles to the Indian economy's growth?

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Moving into a managerial role in the financial industry.

My advice to students considering work

Apply early and do not underestimate the importance of extra-curricular activities.

What I do

A 10-week summer internship at BNP Paribas in their CIB UK Pilot Client Coverage team (Corporate Banking). This department manages the relationships of the banks FTSE 100-250 clients.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I was required to complete an industry report and credit proposal of part of my internship. This enabled me to develop my research skills as I was required to compile information from a variety of different sources, including: broker reports, annual reports, financial statements and professional produced industry reports.

Producing these pieces of work also enabled me to improve my written communication skills as my degree is a BSc and I am predominately by problem-based examinations, I am not regularly required to write essays.

Additionally, I was asked to present my findings in these projects which provided me with a platform to improve my confidence in public speaking and presenting to senior managers.

What I like most

I enjoyed applying aspects of knowledge gained from studying a finance related degree to the real world. I also enjoyed the induction week which incorporating a Fitch Learning training course on markets and a Microsoft Excel masterclass. Working with clients who are household names was also particularly interesting as I was able to develop an understanding of they were performing and their strategies.

I also enjoyed the out of office hours networking with my colleagues down at the local pubs and bars.

What I like least

The lack of client contact was disappointing as it meant the majority of my time was spent behind a computer screen.

What surprised me most

The difference between Commercial Banking and Corporate Banking is huge. Large corporates have significantly more complex needs and the level of technical expertise required to be a relationship manager is very high. I also realised the importance of having a strong internal network and how having the ability to call on help from your friends within the bank can be very important.
