A day in the life of a Undergraduate Finance Internship in the United Kingdom

Undergraduate Finance Internship at Severn Trent Water

How I looked for work

I researched it on the company's graduate website

How I found out about the job

Careers website (University of York)

The recruitment process

It involved several stages. I applied on the company's own website in early 2016. It included industry related questions in the application itself, online tests, a telephone interview, an assessment centre and a final interview.

My advice to students considering work

Apply to as many places as you can, perfect your CV and keep your options open. Never be afraid to ask!

Other advice

Make use of the university careers service whilst you are here!

Contacting me

I am happy to talk about applying for jobs, finance internships and the utilities industry.

What I do

I was a finance intern at Severn Trent Water's head office. Each week I revolved to a different department in the finance team to learn about what they do and for me to do my own project for them.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Communication: Developed by effectively using the company's IT
Teamwork: Each week I worked in a different team and I developed my team work by constantly adapting myself to each situation.
Problem Solving: Each team had a different project to be worked on. I developed this by never being afraid to ask questions.

What I like most

The experience of working in a top FTSE 100 company and the exposure that I received to the financial world

What I like least

Sometimes I felt that a week was not long enough to get properly involved in each team.

What surprised me most

The number of different teams and the communication between all of the different teams.
