My advice to students considering work
A lot of students applying for a career in commercial law only begin thinking about what a career in the industry entails and whether it suits them quite late into the process if at all. Don't be one of them. Apply early for work experience opportunities and try to couple them with developing some of the key competencies of a commercial lawyer, not forgetting that these transferable skills can be shown through a variety of activities and paid or unpaid work. There is often no real substitute for the experience of 'having a job'. Equally begin to think about what makes you different from another aspiring lawyer and how to show and develop this from the outset.
Other advice
Though it may take some research bear in mind that every law firm or employer is different, and there is a good chance that you will fit into the culture of one firm better than others. The best applications don't come from a template, they are tailored to incorporate and match what you like about a firm, why and how this specifically couples with what you have to offer.

What I do
Over three weeks I shadowed trainees and associates within the Structured Capital Markets and Corporate Finance departments at Baker & McKenzie's London office, during my summer holidays. As part of a team I got stuck into project work, training, drafting and research in order to better assist a variety of clients on high value, newsworthy deals and projects.
What I like most
The eye-opening experience; being in a law firm and genuinely seeing the day to day processes that occur was very interesting. With my longest piece of legal work experience lasting just three days, I can say that an extended experience really does allow you to see more and get to grips with understanding and deciding whether you can fit into the atmosphere of an international commercial law firm.
