A day in the life of a Policy Advisor in the United Kingdom
Have experienced a variety of roles since joining the Fast Stream
My career goals when I graduated
I wanted to work in public policy, preferably on climate change policy.
My career history
I started off at a small consultancy. I moved onto the Fast Stream about a year ago. Since then I've worked as a speechwriter in DWP, and in policy roles in the Treasury and Cabinet Office.
What has helped my career to progress
Perserverance! And forming good relationships with people.
Courses taken since graduation
I did a MA in Public Policy at King's College London.
My advice to students considering work
Choose something you will enjoy and are interested in.
My advice about working in my industry
The Civil Service is great: you get to work on the biggest challenges facing society with some of the most talented people. Go for it.
Contacting me
Happy to answer any questions or to be a mentor.
What I do
Policy Advisor at the Cabinet Office, on the Civil Service Fast Stream. I'm currently working on a Government response to an inquiry by the Public Accounts Committee.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Some of the most important skills I use are around assessing evidence and communication. I have to be able to analyse data in order to make good decisions, and then be able to explain what I have done and why I have done it to senior leaders, some of whom don't have much time!
What I like most
Being able to contribute to society on a daily basis; the people I work with; the emphasis on work/life balance.
