A day in the life of a Barrister in the United Kingdom
Barrister (civil).
My career history
After graduating from York, I completed the GDL and BPTC (both one-year courses) before undertaking a 12-month pupillage. I am now a tenant in chambers.
Courses taken since graduation
Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)
My advice to students considering work
Try to get practical experience (through mini-pupillages and activities such as mooting) in order to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the profession.
My advice about working in my industry
The job combines intellectual rigour with communication skills (such as empathy and dealing with difficult clients), which is challenging but also what makes a career at the Bar so fulfilling. Try to demonstrate these skills in your applications and on mini-pupillages.
