A day in the life of a Postdoctoral research fellow in the United States

How I looked for work

Towards the end of my PhD I looked online for academic and non-academic job opportunities as I hadn't yet decided whether to stay in academia or not. I focused my search on the Washington DC area in the USA as I wanted to move there. After a while I decided that I wanted to do a postdoctoral research position and I speculatively contacted a Professor whose work interested me greatly but was a bit outside of my research area.

The recruitment process

I speculatively applied for my position. I had not met the Professor beforehand, so after reading through his website and making sure I was familiar with his publications (especially the recent ones) I contacted him by email. My email was to the point and fairly brief. In the first couple of sentences I mentioned that I was interested in his work and had enjoyed reading a recent paper he had published. In the next couple of sentences I stated that I was coming to the end of my PhD, mentioned briefly what my PhD had focused on, and named my PhD supervisors. In the final sentences I described my interest in continuing to explore [my research area] from the perspective of [his research approach] and asked whether he had any postdoctoral positions available.

We had an in person meeting in Baltimore, as I happened to be travelling nearby at that time. This meeting, which happened in March 2015, was followed up by several skype calls. I started the postdoctoral position in October 2015.

What I do

I am a postdoctoral research fellow investigating the prevalence of different types of hearing loss and the impact hearing loss among older adults has on different health and functional outcomes. I work at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA

What I like most

This is a great place to work. There is a very nice collaborative atmosphere and I have the opportunity to take courses to develop and use new skills.
