A day in the life of a Geophysical Supervisor in the United Kingdom

Need advice or a general chat about archaeology and the sector? I got a job in the commercial sector 2 weeks after graduating.

How I looked for work

BAJR is a great tool for archaeological jobs, word of mouth is also great if you know people inside organisations/ in the profession.

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

The recruitment process

I was lucky as I was selected to be part of a splinter group forming a new office for the company I work in now, and as a result, got a promotion. before my current job, I worked very hard for a few companies, the best thing to do is get your name out there and start earning a reputation for yourself, archaeology is a small world and word gets around that you are either a great worker or not, so if you have the drive and work ethic, to strive in this industry, it will be noticed. Full time contracts are difficult to come by in this profession, so even if you work for a company for 2 or 3 months, just to gain experience in a commercial setting, it is worthwhile.

My career goals when I graduated

To find a stable job in the industry.

My career history

Started off as a site assistant (excavator) for a few months, then moved on to a different company, learnt a hell of a lot very quickly, moved over to geophysics after about a year, got promoted to assistant supervisor, then moved companies where I have been a supervisor since sept 2015.

What has helped my career to progress

Drive and determination to get things done quickly and efficiently.

Courses taken since graduation

Health and Safety course.

How my studies have helped my career

You need a degree to even start in this industry, I didn't want to progress with my studies after my BA course and haven't looked back at all, I'm much more of a hands on- get on and do it type of person.

What surprised me about my career so far

The many and varied places across the UK I've visited.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Senior Archaeologist for Headland Archaeology

My advice to students considering work

Work hard and put the effort in, if archaeology is the area you want to work in. Its tough, muddy and sometimes stressful, but we do it for the love of antiquity and archaeology and I wouldn't have it any other way. you will get noticed if you work hard enough, and remember to listen and take on board everything your superiors have to teach you, its very valuable information.

My advice about working in my industry

It isn't great money, but the feeling of finding archaeology, whether its a hoard of grey-ware in a roman ditch or an iron age settlement complex, is fantastic and makes this profession one of a kind.

Contacting me

Happy to answer anything, happy to mentor any student, I will probably have more to share with a hands on type of person though!

What I do

Shallow archaeological prospection using a range of techniques including magnetometry, resistance, GPR.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Strong team-working, tightly knit teams. Use of sometimes foreign equipment/ software.

What I like most

Finding archaeology!

What I like least

Being away from my family

What surprised me most

Finding new efficiencies and work practice constantly is great if it allows me to get more out of my day in the field.
