A day in the life of a Scientist and Science Writer in Canada

How I looked for work

I was a postdoctoral scientist who wanted to get into the science writing world full time. To begin this transition, I volunteered in my department writing online content for our website. Next, I started my own blog - mmmbitesizescience.com - to create an online portfolio of my writing work. Finally, I established my own online freelance science writing website - swiftsciencewriting.co.uk - to gain practical writing experience and win writing contracts. This gave me a solid body of work to support me in the process of reaching out to well-established scientists to ask for full-time employment in this role.

I e-mailed my prospective boss to enquire about his interest in hiring a science writer and pitch my skills, and then got asked for an interview. At the interview, I took a portfolio of my work, so I could show him practical examples of my writing.

To do good science, and enjoy my work.
